Netflix has released the first look at Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher and Emma Corrin as Princess Diana ahead of The Crown season 4 – and people are conflicted over ‘Hot Maggie’. After giving us a glimpse of the duo in a teaser clip last month, the streaming giant shared a number of pictures ahead of the series launching in November, and fans are already getting hot under the collar. In one snap, Gillian’s Thatcher is seen waving at the paparazzi as she stands outside Number 10. Elsewhere, Emma’s Princess Diana is dressed in a yellow ensemble and looks bewildered as photographers swarm her on the pavement. In another shot, Princess Di is seen awkwardly walking the red carpet alongside her husband Prince Charles (played by Josh O’Connor). Netflix shared a handful of pictures of the rest of the cast, including Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II and Tobias Menzies’ Prince Philip, who were spotted attending the theatre. Fans were also treated to Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, as well Emerald Fennell’s Camilla Parker Bowles having a run-in with Diana.

While the first-look photos came as a welcomed delight, many were left conflicted over Gillian’s portrayal as Thatcher. Voicing their torment, one wrote: ‘Gillian Anderson as Maggie brings up so many conflicted emotions.’

Echoing a similar sentiment, another wrote: ‘No no no I can’t fancy Margaret Thatcher I CAN’T.’

It was announced last September that Gillian would be taking on the role of Thatcher and she shared her delight at joining the cast.

‘I am so excited to be joining the cast and crew of The Crown and to have the opportunity to portray such a complicated and controversial woman,’ she expressed.

‘Thatcher was undoubtedly formidable but I am relishing exploring beneath the surface, and dare I say, falling in love with the icon, who whether loved or despised, defined an era.’

It’s not been confirmed just yet exactly when the new season of The Crown will be taking place, but it’s presumed audiences could see the length of Thatcher’s time in office, the Falklands War in 1982 and the incredible story of the Buckingham House intruder, Michael Fagan, who was able to break into the palace and get all the way to the Queen’s bedroom in 1982. The Crown season 4 arrives Sunday 15th November on Netflix.
