Netflix has renewed Grace and Frankie for a sixth season.

The series stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as two friends whose lives are turned upside down when they husbands (Martin Sheen, Sam Waterston) reveal they are gay and leave their spouses for each other. First premiering in 2015, it has gone on to become one of Netflix’s most successful comedy series, picking up a Golden Globe nomination for Tomlin in 2016 and nine Emmy nominations in the years since.

Created by Friends’ Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris, the programme has managed to stand out from the crowd with its focus on older characters.

“Empowering, funny and boasting one of TV’s best casts, Grace and Frankie only gets better with age,” we wrote in our review of Season 4.

Season 5 premieres this week, with RuPaul, of Drag Race fame, joining the cast as a guest star (playing Benjamin Le Day, “a formidable and quick-witted adversary”). Now, before that has even aired, Netflix has already announced that it will bring back the series once again, ordering a sixth run. The commission makes Grace and Frankie one of Netflix’s longest-running original series, with only House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black and The Ranch also reaching six seasons.
