The 34-year-old appeared as the leading lady in the new CW hit, and made history during the episode How Queer Everything Is Today! when her character came out as a lesbian. But despite playing the first openly gay superhero to headline a TV series, the star will be heading off onto new adventures and recently released a statement announcing her departure. ‘I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,’ she stated. ‘This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles.’ The Australian actress went on: ‘I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created. ‘Thank you Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and The CW who put so much into the show and always believed in me.

‘Thank you to everyone who made season one a success – I am truly grateful.’ Ruby had an eventful time on the show, seeing her hang up her cape when it came to stunts following an injury on set.

The actress was rushed to hospital just last year where she needed emergency neck surgery as two herniated discs in her neck came close to severing her spinal chord.

When asked about her recovery by Variety, she revealed: ‘It’s been a couple of months now and I’m moving around and doing my thing.’

‘Maybe I don’t have to do everything. Maybe there’s some that I can do once or twice and then, you know,’ the star added. ‘I think I’ve earned my stripes already; I’ve done so many stunts in so many projects that I know have to relinquish the controls sometimes.’

The mini-series sees Batwoman team up with a whole host of DC stars including the likes of Supergirl, The Flash and Arrow.

It’s also seen the likes of both Brandon Routh and Tom Welling slide into their spandex to make a Superman comeback.
